How does an Apprenticeship work?

Apprenticeships are an excellent way to gain a recognised qualification and practical experience at the same time – and you get paid, too! Here at Sunderland College, we deliver a wide range of structured Apprenticeship programmes that help you develop your skills as you work.

Develop your skills as you work

You work towards level 2, 3, 4 or 5 qualifications in a subject that is relevant to your employment.

This work consists of study time as well as coursework, which you will complete alongside your employment. At the same time you’ll be encouraged to work on key skills such as communication and working well in a team. The time to do this study will be negotiated with your employer – for example some Apprenticeship frameworks involve ‘day release’ where you attend college for one day a week.

The most appealing part of doing an Apprenticeship is that you get practical on-the-job training rather than simply studying. In fact it can be one of the most rewarding ways to learn about an industry and get a true feel for your chosen career path.

Your employer will create a structured on-the-job training programme so that you get the very best of the opportunities available to you during your Apprenticeship. This will allow you to put everything you learn into practice and apply your knowledge to real-life examples.

Sunderland College is one of the largest Apprenticeship providers in the North East. We have a team that works closely with local employers to ensure we constantly offer a wide range of relevant, exciting Apprenticeship opportunities.
