What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a job with training and hiring an apprentice can be an excellent, cost-effective way to grow your business. The apprentice is an employee of your organisation and a student of the College.

How much does it cost to take on an apprentice?
As an employer the only cost is the salary you pay to the apprentice. The minimum salary for an apprentice of any age is currently £3.30 per hour (this will rise to £3.40 from the 1st of October 2016).
Is there any funding available to employers who take on apprentices?
The Government offers an Age Grant to employers taking on apprentices from 16 to 24 years of age. If your apprentice is within this age range and your organisation doesn’t employ more than 49 employees, and hasn’t employed an apprentice within the last year, then you should qualify for the Age Grant. Employers can claim this grant for up to five apprentices.
How long does it take to complete an Apprenticeship programme?
The duration of Apprenticeships vary depending on what framework the apprentice is undertaking. Most frameworks are complete within just over a year but some can take up to four years.
Can an existing member of staff do an Apprenticeship?
Yes, Sunderland College offers ‘in service’ Apprenticeships. This is an ideal way for employers to up-skill their current staff free of charge.
Would they have to come to college to study?
This depends on what the apprentice is studying, some frameworks involve a ‘day release’ model where apprentices attend the college for one day a week but some frameworks can be delivered entirely in the workplace.
Can the College help me to recruit an apprentice?
Sunderland College offers a free recruitment service and can manage the process for you from start to finish. We advertise the vacancy for you and review all of the applicants. You can then choose the best candidate.
Are there any age restrictions on Apprenticeship programmes?
Apprenticeships are available to anyone from the age of 16 years old onwards. Apprenticeships are ideal for people looking to change careers or get back into employment.
What are the minimum/maximum hours for an apprentice?
Most Apprenticeships require the apprentice to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week. However there are some exceptions to this. The maximum number of hours an apprentice can work for are 40 hours per week.
Can an apprentice do shift work?
16 to 18 year old apprentices should not be expected to work night shift.
What happens at the end of the Apprenticeship?
When the Apprenticeship is complete, depending on the framework, you could progress your apprentice onto an Advanced or Higher level Apprenticeship. You may also have the option of employing your former apprentice as a contracted full-time member of staff.
